Place ID

A Place ID is a stable identifier Google assigns to a place, pointing at one specific venue regardless of changes to its name or address.

Where it comes from

Business names and addresses are ambiguous: one city holds five venues with the same name, and businesses move. A Place ID survives such events, which is why it, rather than the name, is the correct way to point at a venue for analysis.

What it means in practice

You find a Place ID in the Google Maps profile URL or through Google's official tool. In Mutterbox you can simply paste the link to the venue — we extract the identifier ourselves — but with several venues sharing a name it is worth supplying directly.
